Last Saturday I shared these three boutique-style tops I was considering for my fall capsule wardrobe.
Having a capsule wardrobe this summer has made getting dressed easier every morning, given me more confidence since I feel well-dressed every day, and made my closet so much simpler to keep in order. But it took quite a bit of planning to execute, and I’ve been trying to get a head start for fall.
I decided to order all three and see whether I liked them in person, since all three would ship free and also could be returned for free. Well, they arrived mid-week, I’ve tried them all on, and made a decision.
Normally, this picture would not have impressed or attracted me at all – but a local boutique I like had a similar top I really liked. Unfortunately, it was v-neck, which I don’t think is flattering on me, so I started looking for something similar. I don’t know if this style has a name, where it is gathered across the front a few inches below the neckline, but that style usually does look better on me, so I was really excited when I found it.
My biggest worry with this shirt is how short it looks. Keep in mind I’m only 5 foot tall, so what is short on the model, may be okay on me, but I will not wear a shirt that will show skin when I reach for the top shelf, so that was a potential deal-breaker.
The style is definitely on the trendy side and I may only wear it for a few years. I don’t mind having a couple of tops like that in my capsule, since I know I’m going to want to have some variety from year to year anyway. Most of the clothes in my capsule do need to stand the test of time.
Here is a side view of this shirt on me so you can see the length – what do you think?
From the picture, this top was really cute. I like the twist front, and have been looking for a black and white stripe shirt. My post last week had a lot of feedback that the cold-shoulder trend is nearing the end, and this shirt is just too trendy (thank you!). I ordered this one in a medium, but it was enormous on me and looked terrible. I really didn’t even want to share a picture because it looks so bad, but in the interest of helping others evaluate the shirt for themselves, I’m sacrificing my pride and sharing this icky picture.
This top is SO cute, and I just love the little bow on the back. It fit me very well. The sleeves were just the right length and it seemed well-made. The biggest negative is that my hair covers the bow unless I wear it up, and I very rarely do that. Somehow, I missed taking a picture with this one on me, but it did look really cute.
No knock against this shirt, but I also realized that I have a similar top in my closet already:
So here’s the decisions I made:
- Red Gingham Bell Sleeve Top – I really loved how this one fits me. I don’t own anything like it. The length was just right. I kept this one, and I am so excited to wear it soon!
- Three-Quarter Sleeve Cold Shoulder Twist-Front Top – probably no surprise that I decided to send this one back! It just think it has too much going on between the cold shoulder, stripes and twist front.
- Bell Sleeve Back Bow Top – this one was a bit of a tough decision. It fit me very well, but my hair and the bow weren’t working well together. Since I already had a similar shirt it just wasn’t the best item to add to my capsule. This one has been sent back as well.
